The death toll from the powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June has climbed to 6,509, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez has said.
Rodriguez disclosed the updated figures on Monday in a post on X, as authorities intensify reconstruction and recovery efforts following the devastating earthquakes.
According to Rodriguez, emergency response teams have so far rescued 6,462 people trapped or affected by the disaster.
Meanwhile, 226,696 people have received medical treatment at hospitals across the South American country, the latest government figures show.
Authorities have also inspected 60,785 homes to determine their safety. Of those assessed, 35,545 were found to be habitable, while 14,239 were placed under restricted-use status and another 11,001 were deemed at high risk.
The government has so far provided 335 newly built homes to families who were displaced by the earthquakes, Rodriguez said.
Debris removal has continued across affected areas, with cleanup crews clearing 600,790.70 tons of wreckage. The amount represents 28.61% of the total debris estimated to have been generated by the disaster, he added.
The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24, causing extensive damage and leading the government to activate nationwide emergency response measures.
