Nigerian cultural entertainer and talking drummer Abike Ilu has explained the inspiration behind her distinctive talking drum-shaped hairstyle, describing it as a reflection of her identity and commitment to preserving Yoruba culture.

According to Vanguard, Abike said the hairstyle was deliberately created to communicate who she is and what she represents even before she steps on stage to perform.

Hairstyle reflects Abike’s cultural identity

“The drum-inspired hairstyle is more than a fashion statement; it is my identity and a symbol of my passion for Yoruba culture,” she said.

Abike explained that as a talking drummer, she wanted a signature appearance that would immediately connect her personality with her craft.

“As a talking drummer, I wanted something that immediately tells people who I am and what I represent before I even perform,” she said.

Although maintaining the hairstyle requires considerable effort, the entertainer said she considers it an important investment in her growing brand.

“Maintaining it requires time, commitment, and resources, but I see it as an investment in my brand,” she said.

According to her, the unusual appearance has succeeded in making her easily recognisable while also generating conversations wherever she performs.

“It has sparked conversations, made me easily recognizable, and helped people remember me wherever I go. Many now identify me simply by that unique look. So yes, it has achieved its purpose,” she added.

Abike blends tradition with modern sounds

Beyond her appearance, Abike describes herself as a cultural entertainer, talking drummer and performer whose work centres on preserving and promoting Yoruba heritage through music and stage performances.

Her sound combines traditional talking drum rhythms with contemporary music and a modern approach to live entertainment.

“My style blends traditional talking drum rhythms with contemporary sounds and modern stage presentation,” she said.

Abike explained that the combination allows her to appeal to different generations without abandoning the traditional foundations of her music.

“This allows me to connect with older audiences who appreciate tradition and younger generations who enjoy modern entertainment,” she said.

She added that traditional culture could adapt to changing times while retaining its originality.

“I believe culture should evolve without losing its originality, and that is exactly what my music represents. It is Afro-cultural,” Abike said.

Drummer takes heritage to wider audiences

Abike has continued to build her presence through performances at cultural festivals, weddings, corporate events, community celebrations and other social gatherings.

She has also embraced social media and other digital platforms to take her performances beyond audiences who encounter her physically at events.

For the entertainer, the talking drum is more than an instrument for creating music. It has become a tool for keeping Yoruba traditions visible and introducing aspects of the culture to younger generations.

Her approach places culture at the centre of her brand, combining her signature hairstyle, music and stagecraft to create an identity rooted strongly in Yoruba heritage.

Through every performance, Abike hopes to demonstrate that traditional culture can remain relevant and exciting while still preserving the history and identity from which it originated.
