Canada has invited 1,000 skilled workers to apply for permanent residence in its latest Express Entry draw. This draw targets candidates under the Canadian Experience Class.
According to The Punch, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada conducted the invitation round on Tuesday, August 18. Candidates required a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score of 523 to qualify.
The latest round allows candidates ranked among the first 1,000 eligible applicants in the Canadian Experience Class pool to submit applications for permanent residence.
1,000 candidates receive invitations
The ministerial instructions showed that the draw was conducted at 10:13:44 UTC on August 18.
“Number of invitations issued: 1,000,” the notice stated.
It added that invitations could be issued to eligible foreign nationals who ranked among the first 1,000 candidates in the group.
A tie-breaking rule of August 17, 2026, at 22:09:00 UTC was also applied.
Under the rule, where two or more candidates have the lowest qualifying CRS score, priority is determined by the date and time their Express Entry profiles were submitted.
Latest draw more competitive
The August 18 exercise recorded a higher CRS threshold and fewer invitations than the previous Canadian Experience Class draw held on August 5.
That round invited 3,000 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 516. By comparison, the latest cut-off is 523 for just 1,000 invitations.
The increase means candidates needed seven more CRS points to qualify in the latest round, making the selection more competitive.
How Express Entry works
Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing applications from skilled workers seeking permanent residence.
Candidates create profiles and are assigned scores under the Comprehensive Ranking System. Scores are given based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency and work experience.
Those with the highest scores can then receive invitations to apply for permanent residence during selection rounds. These are organised by Canadian immigration authorities.
The system manages three major federal economic immigration programmes — the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Who qualifies for Canadian Experience Class
The Canadian Experience Class is primarily designed for skilled workers who have already gained eligible work experience in Canada. These are workers who want to become permanent residents.
Applicants generally need at least one year of qualifying skilled Canadian work experience acquired within the previous three years.
Language requirements also depend on the type of occupation, while candidates must meet other immigration and admissibility requirements.
Unlike some immigration pathways, there is no formal education requirement under the Canadian Experience Class. However, education can improve a candidate’s CRS score.
Applicants under the programme must also intend to live outside Quebec, which operates its own immigration selection system.
Canada continues targeted draws
The latest invitation round continues Canada’s use of targeted Express Entry draws. These draws select candidates who meet particular immigration and labour-market requirements.
For the 1,000 candidates invited on August 18, receiving an invitation does not automatically grant permanent residence. They must still submit their applications and satisfy the required eligibility and admissibility conditions before receiving approval.
