Cristiano Ronaldo and his wife Georgina Rodríguez chose to have their wedding in their living room because they wanted something intimate and unusual, the couple has revealed.
The Portuguese football star and his long-time partner tied the knot on August 11 at their home in Cascais, Portugal, with their five children present.
In an interview with Vogue magazine published on Sunday, Rodríguez explained why they opted for a small ceremony instead of a grand celebration.
“In the future, we will have a big wedding, so we can celebrate with family and friends,” she said.
“When I was a little girl, I dreamt of the biggest castle, the biggest carriage, the longest dress, a crown full of diamonds. And now I’m saying, ‘No. I want something intimate, with my partner and our children, at home.’
“Because castles, houses, islands, horses, cars: We have all of that within reach every day. But something intimate — that’s more unusual for us.”
The couple married in their living room in Cascais with their five children present — twins Eva Maria and Mateo, 9, daughter Alana, 8, daughter Bella, 4, and 16-year-old son Cristiano Jr. The latter was from a previous relationship of Ronaldo’s.
“We’ve chosen to do it in the living room of our house here, where we have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and where we live the reality of our lives,” Rodríguez told the outlet.
“In 30 years’ time I want the children to think, ‘Something wonderful happened at this table — the wedding vows of our parents.'”
The 41-year-old Portuguese soccer legend quickly joked: “It probably won’t be the same table. We might change the decor.”
The two revealed the news in a joint Instagram post that showed off the couple’s hands with their gold wedding bands.
“C❤️G” Ronaldo captioned the post.
Rodríguez admitted she “couldn’t hold back” her emotions during the intimate ceremony.
“It was exactly as I’d imagined it,” Rodríguez said about the ceremony. “Intimate, full of love, and with our family in the most important starring role. I couldn’t hold back the tears.”
Ronaldo and Rodríguez first met when she was a sales assistant at a Gucci store in 2017. The two were later spotted together for the first time at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich and made things official in May of that same year.
In a full circle moment, Gucci dressed the couple for the ceremony.
“It felt incredibly special to dress Georgina and Cristiano for this moment, knowing their love story began in a Gucci store in Madrid,” Gucci artistic director Demna told Vogue. “There is something so romantic about it — a beautiful circle closing, almost like a modern fairy tale.”
The couple had earlier announced the death of Bella’s newborn twin brother, Ángel, in April 2022.
As for whether they would have more children, Rodríguez said: “Another baby now would be ‘overbooking’ at home, but when the youngest are 15 or 16 we’ll still be young, so why not? It’s true that I can’t imagine myself without small children, so we’ll see.”
