Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has warned that the government will not tolerate the activities of people who stop vehicles under the guise of car spotting. In particular, he mentioned activities along the Lekki-Epe corridor.
Hamzat gave the warning after concerns were raised during an interview at Nigeria Info FM. The concerns centred around groups of young men stopping vehicles around the Lekki axis. This was described as a menace for motorists using the road.
The Deputy Governor said the state had already begun taking action against those involved. He insisted that some of the activities had crossed the line into criminal behaviour.
“Now it has started, as you can see, because a lot of that is criminal. And that one, we will not allow it. So we will take a lot of them off the street,” Hamzat said.
Hamzat confirms arrests over Lagos car spotting
Hamzat disclosed that several arrests had already been made. Meanwhile, surveillance cameras installed along the road were also helping authorities identify individuals involved in unlawful activities.
“A lot of people have been arrested already. If you commit, now, a lot of cameras are also on that road, and people have been seen,” he said.
He added that some of those arrested over the weekend were already before a magistrate court.
“I can show you people, some people are in the magistrate court today. They were arrested last week also, I think towards the weekend,” Hamzat said.
The issue was raised after the presenter appealed to the Deputy Governor to use his office to address what he described as disturbing activities around a roundabout leading towards Lekki. In those activities, young men allegedly stop passing vehicles.
“Use your influence as Deputy Governor to stop this nonsense that goes on just down your road, by that roundabout going to Lekki, with these boys stopping cars and so on,” the presenter said.
Hamzat maintained that Lagos authorities would continue enforcement efforts against anyone whose activities amount to harassment or criminal conduct on the road.
