Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has explained why he rejected the Netherlands job. He said he is not yet ready to leave the daily demands of club football for international management.
According to The Punch, citing BBC Sport, Slot held talks with the Royal Dutch Football Association over succeeding Ronald Koeman. However, he decided not to take the process further. He also dismissed reports suggesting negotiations collapsed over salary or the length of the proposed contract.
“That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks,” Slot said.
Why Slot rejected Netherlands job
The 47-year-old said the major factor was his desire to continue working closely with players every day. He believes international football cannot offer this in the same way.
“At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team,” he said.
Slot added that this was why he chose to end discussions before negotiations over contractual terms even began.
“And that is why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like,” he said.
The former Feyenoord coach stressed that his decision should not be interpreted as a rejection of the Dutch national team or the KNVB.
“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week,” Slot said.
“For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me.”
Slot leaves door open for future Netherlands role
Despite rejecting the opportunity this time, Slot did not rule out taking charge of his country later in his career.
“It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me,” he said.
Slot previously guided Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in 2023 before moving on to Liverpool.
With him now out of contention for the Netherlands position, reports in the country suggest former Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has emerged among the candidates. He is being considered for the role.
