Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed directly to United States President Donald Trump to pay attention to the Osun State governorship election. He warned of growing concerns over possible violence and intimidation.
According to The Punch, Davido made the appeal in a post on X on Tuesday. He called on the United States and the wider international community to monitor developments ahead of the August 15 poll. Furthermore, he urged them to encourage authorities to protect voters.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election,” Davido wrote.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process.”
‘Osun people deserve to vote without fear’
Davido said his major concern was ensuring that residents could participate in the election freely. He emphasised they should do so without fear of attacks or intimidation.
“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” he said.
The singer called for international attention on the conduct of the election. He argued that every voter should be protected and the eventual choice of the electorate respected.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected,” he wrote.
Davido also stressed that his appeal was centred on preventing bloodshed rather than escalating political tensions.
“We do not want bloodshed, We do not want intimidation, We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.
Davido follows through on Trump warning
The direct appeal comes days after Davido threatened to draw Trump’s attention to the election if he believed the process was compromised.
During a livestream with comedian Carter Efe, the singer said he was prepared to tag the US president. Moreover, he would even take his concerns to the White House if necessary.
“I’ll tag Trump, I’ll call Trump, everybody,” Davido said at the time.
His latest message marks a more formal attempt to draw international attention to the election. This comes as political activities intensify across Osun.
Singer backs Adeleke’s re-election
Davido has openly supported the re-election bid of his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke. His uncle is contesting on the platform of the Accord Party.
Despite his political alignment, the singer has repeatedly framed his public messages around peaceful voting and respect for the electorate.
In an earlier appeal, he urged political actors and their supporters to reject violence, intimidation and provocation. He declared: “Your vote is your voice, and your choice deserves to be respected.”
Adeleke is facing challengers including All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji and African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam.
With voters preparing to head to the polls on August 15, Davido has now taken his campaign for a peaceful election beyond Nigeria. He is asking Trump and the international community to keep watch.
His message remains clear: “We do not want bloodshed.”
