Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has called on the Nigerian military to intensify operations against bandits attacking communities in the state. He said residents must be protected and farmers allowed to return safely to their farmlands.
According to Vanguard, Idris made the call on Friday during an unscheduled visit to newly deployed troops at their camp in Yauri. He also thanked the Chief of Army Staff and the military leadership for responding to the state’s request for additional personnel.
The governor said the extra deployment would strengthen existing security operations, particularly around the Yauri, Shanga and Ngaski axis. This area has experienced incursions by armed groups from neighbouring states.
Idris noted that security agencies already operating in the affected communities had continued to confront the threat. He said the arrival of more soldiers would boost their capacity and morale.
Kebbi bandit attacks threaten farming communities
The governor expressed concern that continued Kebbi bandit attacks could disrupt livelihoods. He also worried it could make it difficult for residents to cultivate their farms.
He said both federal and state governments must work together to secure vulnerable areas. This collaboration would create conditions that allow farmers to return to their land without fear.
“Bandits are trying to embarrass us. They are coming to attack our people,” Idris said, urging the security forces to use their full operational capacity against the armed groups.
He added that he remained confident in the professionalism of the Nigerian military. In addition, he pointed to its record in international peacekeeping missions.
Governor pledges support for security agencies
Idris assured the troops that his administration would continue providing the support and enabling environment required for security agencies. This would help them carry out their operations effectively.
He described security as a collective responsibility and said state governments must remain active partners in efforts to protect communities.
The governor also commended the troops for their commitment. Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the strengthened military presence would improve security across affected parts of Kebbi.
During the visit to Yauri, Idris also paid homage to the Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi.
He later commissioned a new Jumu’a Mosque in the Tudun-Gwamna area, where he joined residents for Friday prayers.
The Emir thanked the governor for what he described as his continued support and concern for people across the Yauri Emirate.
