Content creator, Tobeszn, has challenged widespread stereotypes about Generation Z, arguing that many criticisms of the generation are rooted in misunderstanding rather than reality.
Speaking on the MENtality with Ebuka podcast, Tobeszn said every generation is shaped by the social and economic conditions it inherits. He noted that Gen Z has grown up in an era defined by rapid technological advancement, economic uncertainty, increased awareness of mental health and constant digital connectivity, factors that have influenced its values and worldview.
According to him, Gen Z’s willingness to question traditional norms should not be mistaken for rebellion or disrespect. Instead, he said many young people are more comfortable prioritising work-life balance, speaking openly about mental health and leaving environments they consider unhealthy.
Tobeszn also addressed perceptions of Gen Z’s communication style, explaining that while older generations may view their directness as rude, many young people see it as a reflection of honesty and authenticity. He added that although social media is often criticised for encouraging vanity, many Gen Z creators have successfully turned digital platforms into sustainable careers and businesses.
Highlighting the generation’s adaptability, Tobeszn pointed to Gen Z’s growing influence in content creation, technology, entrepreneurship and the creative industries, where many are pursuing career paths that were virtually nonexistent a decade ago.
While acknowledging that Gen Z faces challenges, including the pressures of online life and an uncertain economy, Tobeszn cautioned against reducing the generation to stereotypes. He argued that doing so only widens the gap between young people and those seeking to understand them.
He concluded that the conversation should move beyond whether Gen Z is different and instead focus on understanding the reasons behind the generation’s distinct outlook and approach to life.
