The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey building in the Alakija area of Lagos State has risen to eight, while 26 people have been rescued alive, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
In an update issued at 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said rescue operations were still ongoing at the scene.
“As of 4:20 p.m., a total of 26 persons have been rescued, while eight fatalities have been recorded, including a baby girl,” he said.
He added that search and rescue efforts remained active as emergency responders continued to comb through the rubble for anyone who might still be trapped.
“Search and rescue operations remain ongoing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
Emergency responders from LASEMA and other agencies have remained at the site since the building collapsed earlier on Thursday, with heavy equipment deployed to support the ongoing operation.
