Presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has pledged to tackle criminal activities across the country if elected president in 2027.

Obi made the declaration while criticising the fuel subsidy regime, which he described as an organised crime against the nation.

The former Labour Party flagbearer, who is now aligned with the NDC, shared his views during an appearance on Trust TV.

During the interview, he questioned the credibility of Nigeria’s reported fuel consumption, arguing that the figures do not align with realities in comparable countries. “Subsidy is organized crime and I won’t allow any form of criminality as the President of Nigeria. The amount of fuel they say we consume cannot be consumed by this country, there’s emperical evidence,” he said.

He further drew comparisons with Pakistan to support his argument. “We are about the same as Pakistan, they have more roads and we probably have the same number of vehicles or they have even more, yet their fuel consumption is a third of ours, so who is drinking the balance?” he added.

Obi also reflected on the 2023 presidential election, noting that he and other contenders had committed to scrapping the fuel subsidy. He pointed out that President Bola Tinubu, who won the election, later announced the removal of the subsidy during his inauguration at Eagle Square in Abuja.
