Police arrest Abia man for allegedly killing nurse girlfriend

The Abia State Police Command has arrested Edward Okorie, from Isiugwu, Ohafia, in Ohafia Local Government Area, for allegedly killing a young nurse, Sophy Chika, during a domestic altercation.

Sources who pleaded anonymity for security reasons disclosed that Chika, who hails from Ozu Abam in Arochukwu LGA, was reportedly murdered on Monday during a dispute with her boyfriend. The couple had been living together in Okagwe village in Ohafia for over three years before the incident occurred.

“The tragedy struck yesterday at Isiugwu Ohafia. Mr Edward Okorie killed his girlfriend, Miss Sophy Chika, who hails from Ozu Abam in Arochukwu LGA, over a minor misunderstanding that ensued between them. The lovers, who were cohabiting for over three years now, had a misunderstanding in the early hour of yesterday and she was reportedly beaten to death by Mr Edward Okorie,” one source said.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, stated that the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia briefed her on the matter.

Chinaka said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Umuahia for thorough investigation.

“Yes, the attention of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Ohafia, was called to it. The suspect has been apprehended, and the case will be transferred to SCID today by the DPO,” she stated.

She assured that the command has commenced an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragic development has sparked shock and grief within the Abam community, with residents calling for justice and a comprehensive probe into the matter.
