The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has refuted social media reports claiming the federal government directed it to reverse the ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic products.
In a statement signed by Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency described the publication as false, misleading, and unconnected to any official communication.
“The said publication is false, misleading, and does not reflect any official communication received by the agency from the federal government. At no time has the agency received any formal directive ordering the suspension of its regulatory or enforcement activities in respect of sachet alcohol products,” Adeyeye stated.
NAFDAC said it has already begun evacuating violative sachet alcohol and alcohol in PET bottles below 200ml from various companies. The agency noted that some companies have realized its goal is to protect children from easy access and have stopped producing these smaller pack sizes.
“As published, about 50 percent of minors and underage patronise retailers of alcohol sold in sachets and PET bottles less than 200 ml,” the statement read.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to public health and regulatory compliance, urging the public and media to disregard the false report and rely only on verified information from official channels. It cautioned against disseminating unverified information capable of causing misinformation and misinterpretation of government policy.
