Armed bandits on Saturday night kidnapped a bride, her bridesmaids, and several wedding guests in Chacho village, Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to a Vanguard news report the attack happened around midnight. The gunmen entered the village, shooting into the air before taking the women who had gathered to support the bride.
The Sokoto APC chairman, Hon. Isah Sadeeq Achida, confirmed that people were abducted but said he could not confirm if the bride was among them. He also said he did not know the exact number of victims. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, were not successful as he did not answer calls or reply to messages.
The incident happened only hours after a ransom of about four million naira and a motorcycle was reportedly paid to free earlier victims in Rabah town. The repeated attacks have continued to raise fear across the state.
Chacho village, which is the hometown of the Sokoto State Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Shehu Alhaji Chacho, is the latest community targeted by kidnappers.
A resident who did not want his name mentioned described the attack as heartbreaking. He said, “Women, children, and even old people ran into the bushes while the gunmen moved around without any challenge.”
He added that the bandits have not contacted the bride’s family or any leaders in the village, leaving the community confused and worried about the victims.
