Bayelsa State has begun commercial flight operations using its state-owned aircraft, operated by Pioneer Airlines, marking a major step in the state’s transport and economic plans.
The inaugural flight arrived at Bayelsa International Airport on Wednesday morning from Abuja. The ATR-72/600 aircraft left Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 09:30 with around 50 passengers on board.
Those on the flight included Governor Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, members of the National Assembly caucus, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Heineken Lokpobiri, and Niger Delta Development Commission Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku.
After landing, the aircraft received a water cannon salute from airport fire service personnel.
In October, the state government announced that it had acquired two aircraft to start commercial operations from the airport.
Governor Diri described the launch as an important moment and said his administration was keeping its promise to open Bayelsa to more air travel.
He said, “Six years ago, we promised the people of Bayelsa a future of air connectivity and opportunity. Today, that promise takes flight as Bayelsa launches its own commercial air services.”
He added, “This achievement heralds a new era of connectivity for Bayelsa, bringing regular and reliable air services that will stimulate commerce and development, connect businesses to new markets, and empower our people to thrive.”
The governor also directed that the airline, currently run under Pioneer Airlines, be renamed Air Bayelsa to reflect its status as a state carrier.
He thanked former governors, including the late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha who first envisioned the airport, and Seriake Dickson who advanced the project. He also appreciated Premium Trust Bank, Pioneer Airlines, and the state House of Assembly for their support.
Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, said the airline will serve routes across the Niger Delta, including Port Harcourt, Warri, Uyo, and Calabar, as well as Lagos and Abuja.
Cabin crew and flight attendants have already been trained and deployed.
Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, Captain Henry Ungbuku, said the airline would represent the hopes of Bayelsa residents and the Niger Delta. Premium Trust Bank, which helped finance the aircraft, also praised the rollout.
National and regional leaders, including Senator Konbowei Benson and Pan Niger Delta Forum President Boladei Igali, welcomed the development and pledged support for the growth of the new airline.
