The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raised a fresh warning about Bledine Infant Cereals after Chad banned the products over contamination concerns.
The cereals, made by Danone Group, include Bledine Cereals Saveur biscuit, Bledine Saveur Biscuit and Lait, Bledine Miel and Lait, and Bledine Banane and Lait. The affected expiry dates fall between September 2026 and March 2027.
NAFDAC said the products are already in circulation across Nigeria, especially in border communities close to Chad.
According to the alert sent to the agency, Chad banned the cereals after they failed European safety tests for Aflatoxin B1, a dangerous toxin linked to cancer.
NAFDAC said Aflatoxin B1 can weaken the immune system of infants and young children.
The agency said:
“Assessments have shown that the affected batches are present in Nigeria, and this raises serious concerns about the safety of infant cereals sold in local markets.”
NAFDAC has ordered its zonal directors and state coordinators to begin wide market checks and remove all affected products. The checks will cover retail shops, open markets, and distribution channels that supply goods through border routes.
Distributors, retailers, health workers, and parents have been told to be more careful. NAFDAC advised that all infant foods should be checked for proper labelling, expiry dates, and signs of damage, and should only be bought from approved suppliers.
The agency also urged Nigerians to report any strange reactions linked to the products.
