The Lagos State chapter of the African Action Congress on Saturday elected a new set of executive members to steer the party’s affairs for the next four years.

According to a statement released after the state congress and made available to Saturday Independent, the election process was supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies.

The congress took place at 17 Ajanikuti Street, Oworonshoki, and drew participation from members across the state.

“There were 83 delegates from the 20 Local Government Areas, with over 100 party faithful in attendance,” the statement noted.

The newly elected General Secretary, Jegede Kehinde Olatunji, signed the statement, announcing Olanrewaju Samson as the new State Chairman, succeeding Ayoyinka Oni, who had completed his tenure. Other key officers include Olawale Ayinde as Deputy Chairman (Lagos West), Godonu Ayomide as Deputy Chairman (Lagos Central), and Adetayo Daniel as the new Publicity Secretary.

Additional appointments include Olasoji Michael (Organising Secretary), Ovie Princewill (Financial Secretary), and Moses Wenayon Hungbeme (State Treasurer).

The party stated: “Today’s congress brought to an end the administration elected on August 7, 2022 that was headed by Comrade Ayoyinka Oni and his team, while the party elected new state executive members saddled with the affair of our party for the next four years.”

It further noted that INEC officials present used the opportunity to sensitise attendees on the ongoing voter registration exercise, encouraging members to register via the commission’s website. The election was conducted through an open-secret ballot process, and the oath of office was immediately administered to all elected members of the State Working Committee (SWC).

In a related development, the party extended its appreciation to all individuals who contributed financially to its participation in the July local government elections. The AAC acknowledged both private and public donations that supported its campaign efforts across several wards.

Providing a breakdown of its electoral activities, the statement read: “The AAC party in Lagos did not lose the election because there was no election, but the people lost the chance of getting proper leadership at Oworonshoki Ward A and B, Agiliti, Mende, Wilmer, Ikotun Ijegun, Shitta, Lagos Island East and Igando.”

It added: “Despite this our people are still leading the fight to liberate their communities from police brutality, hunger, demolition and lots more.”

The party accused the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of denying the people credible elections.

“LASIEC, the APC and Babajide Sanwo-Olu would surely pay for robbing the people of an opportunity to vote in true leaders while installing thugs and crooks to manage the affairs of the local government areas.

“We will never stop until our dear state is free from thieves, thugs and men who lack vision and new ideas pretending they are leaders,” the statement concluded.
