Senator Friday Konbowei, who represents Bayelsa Central, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Konbowei announced his defection in a letter to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, which was read during plenary on Thursday.
He explained that his decision was due to what he described as the unending internal crises within the PDP.
According to him, “I can no longer remain in a party struggling with persistent leadership disputes and divisions.”
His defection marks another major win for the APC, which has continued to attract lawmakers from opposition parties in recent weeks.
With Konbowei’s move, the APC now holds a stronger two-thirds majority in the Senate with 74 members. The PDP now has 27 senators, while the Social Democratic Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party have one each. The All Progressives Grand Alliance retains two.
The defection also weakens the PDP’s influence in the South-South region, which has long been one of its strongest bases, and adds to the ongoing political shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
