Outrage has trailed a viral video showing bruises allegedly inflicted on a three-year-old pupil by her teacher at a private school in Abakpa Nike, Enugu State.
The incident, which reportedly happened on Monday, has sparked widespread condemnation from Nigerians who are demanding justice for the child.
In the video, the child’s mother was seen crying uncontrollably as she called for the teacher to be brought out. Bystanders could be heard urging her to remain calm and insisting that the teacher be produced.
The mother alleged she received a phone call from the school asking her to come over after her daughter was flogged to the point that she could no longer walk.
“I want to show you people my baby’s wound. Are you seeing what a teacher did to my child?” she cried in the footage.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the school nor the Enugu State Ministry of Education has issued an official statement on the matter.
In a similar incident earlier this year, a Lagos teacher was arrested for repeatedly slapping a three-year-old boy during a writing lesson. Following that case, the Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network described such actions as “the highest form of child cruelty by a supposed childminder,” stressing that abuse of this nature carries serious consequences.
