The Lagos State Government and the All Progressives Congress have again been thrown into mourning after the death of another female local government official, bringing the number of such losses to five in just two months.

The latest tragedy is the passing of Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola, Council Manager of Coker Aguda Local Council Development Area and Chairman of the Forum of Council Managers in Lagos State.

Akintola reportedly died on Monday, September 29, 2025, after a brief illness. As Council Manager, she was the administrative and accounting head of her LCDA, while also representing her colleagues statewide as their forum leader.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Forum of Council Managers confirmed her death. The group said: “With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of our Chairman, Mrs. Adebimpe Akintola, on Monday, September 29, 2025. She served as the Council Manager of Coker/Aguda LCDA until her death.”

The forum also announced her burial plans, stating that she would be laid to rest on Tuesday, September 30, in accordance with Islamic rites. “The Janazah Prayer is scheduled for Al Kitab Mosque, Abosede Onamade Street, Eleshin, after Zuhr Prayer at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at the Equitable CDA Muslim Cemetery, Igbe Lara, at 2:00 p.m.,” the statement added.

Her death has thrown staff at Coker Aguda LCDA and other council managers across Lagos into grief, with many describing her passing as a huge loss to grassroots governance.

Council Managers, also called Heads of Administration, oversee the 20 local governments and 37 LCDAs in Lagos as both administrative leaders and accounting officers.

Mrs. Akintola’s passing adds to a troubling string of deaths among female council officials in the state. Since the new council administration was inaugurated on July 27, 2025, four others have died.

On August 13, Mrs. Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor for Ward C, Ibeju Lekki Local Government, passed away.

On August 18, Mrs. Zainab Shotayo, Councillor for Ward C, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, also died.

On September 20, Princess Oluremi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, was confirmed dead.

A day later, on September 21, Mrs. Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor for Ward F, Somolu Local Government, also passed away.

With Akintola’s death, the number has now risen to five in just over six weeks, sparking concerns over the frequent losses within Lagos’ council leadership.
