The sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna, has died weeks after a tragic accident in Edo State.
Ruth Otabor, who graduated from Auchi Polytechnic only six days before the accident, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m. Her family announced the news through a statement signed by Eko Solicitors & Advocates.
“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st Day of August, 2025, at about 06:30Hrs,” the statement said.
They appealed to the public to allow them privacy as they grieve. “The family is presently grieving and will appreciate to be given a private moment to mourn the departed. The funeral arrangement will be communicated to the public in due course,” the statement added.
Ruth’s ordeal started on August 13, 2025, when she was hit by a truck linked to the Dangote Group near Auchi Polytechnic. Eyewitnesses said the truck crushed her leg before it was stopped by a bystander. She later underwent a leg amputation as part of efforts to save her life.
Her accident had earlier sparked a heated online controversy between Phyna and social media activist Very Darkman (VDM). Phyna had shared details of her sister’s health with VDM while seeking support for her treatment. However, she accused him of betraying her trust by posting a video revealing private information, a move that complicated Ruth’s care and sparked public criticism.
VDM also accused Phyna of betrayal, saying there were communication gaps during their attempts to get justice and proper treatment from the Dangote Group. The situation drew wide attention online, with many urging both parties to make peace.
Sadly, despite ongoing treatment and public calls for support, Ruth’s health worsened, leading to her death.
The Otabor family says details of her funeral will be released later.
