The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man for allegedly dealing in illegal arms and ammunition in Nkpor, near Onitsha, the commercial hub of the state.
Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday. He said operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad in Akwuzu acted on credible intelligence to apprehend the suspect, identified as Akpan Godwin, on Friday.
“The Anambra State Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Akwuzu, acting on credible information on Friday, arrested one Akpan Godwin, aged 65 years, in possession of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition in Nkpor, Onitsha,” the statement read.
Ikenga said during interrogation, the suspect admitted to being involved in the illegal sale of ammunition and named other individuals connected to the illicit trade.
“Meanwhile, the operatives have stepped up the investigation and manhunt to uncover and apprehend all accomplices. Further developments will be communicated,” Ikenga added.
The police said the recovered ammunition has been taken into custody as investigations continue to track down others in the arms network.
