Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has advised the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to reconsider his pledge to serve only one term if elected president in 2027, stressing that political realities in Nigeria make such commitments difficult to uphold.

In an interview granted on Friday, Governor Sule addressed Obi’s repeated declaration of his willingness to step down after a single term, cautioning that the complexities of Nigeria’s political environment could derail such plans.

He explained that while candidates may enter office with sincere intentions, the weight of political influence and vested interests often proves overwhelming.

“Peter Obi might say he wants to do one term, but it is not up to him,” Sule said.

“Once he assumes office, powerful interests will pressure him, saying, ‘It’s our turn; you cannot do that to us,’ ‘we cannot allow you to do that,’ and ‘we will take you to court if you do that.’”

Governor Sule emphasized that even a full four-year term may not be sufficient to tackle the country’s deep-rooted challenges, let alone a shorter duration.

He urged Obi and other presidential hopefuls to be realistic about the demands of leadership in Nigeria.
