Liverpool and Portugal football star Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 following a car crash in northwestern Spain, Spanish authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The fatal accident happened on the A-52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora Province. Police said the vehicle veered off the road in the municipality of Cernadilla. Jota and his younger brother, Andre Felipe, were both in the car and died at the scene.
Jota, who had recently gotten married, was one of the key forwards for Liverpool and a regular member of Portugal’s national team. His death has shocked fans across the world.
Spanish newspaper MARCA first reported the tragic incident, writing, “Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota dies in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora.”
Local police, the Civil Guard, confirmed that the crash led to the deaths of two people and identified them as Diogo Jota and his brother.
Jota, born in 1996, had a strong football career marked by sharp movement, versatility, and the ability to score under pressure. He joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and quickly became a fan favorite at Anfield.
No details have yet been released on what caused the crash. Funeral arrangements were also not announced at the time of filing this report.
