A football fan has died after falling from the stands during the UEFA Nations League final between Portugal and Spain on Sunday night in Munich, Germany.
The incident happened during the first half of extra time at the Allianz Arena. The fan reportedly fell from the central tier of the stadium into the press area below, a drop of about eight metres.
Emergency medical teams and police quickly responded to the scene, but the fan sadly died from their injuries.
A spokesperson for UEFA confirmed the death in a statement, saying there had been a “medical emergency” and that a spectator had “sadly passed away during the match.”
Portugal won the final 5-3 on penalties after the match ended 2-2, but the celebration was overshadowed by the tragic event.
Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, spoke at the post-match press conference and expressed his grief.
“I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life,” he said.
A representative from the Portuguese team also shared their sadness, saying the death “casts a shadow on our victory today.”
Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martinez, added, “It’s extremely sad news. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the fan.”
The cause of the fall is not yet clear, and authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
