England captain Harry Kane has finally won his first major trophy after Bayern Munich were crowned Bundesliga champions on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Kane and his Bayern teammates secured the title without playing, after their closest rivals Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 with Freiburg. Leverkusen had to win to stay in the race but could not get the needed result, allowing Bayern to lift the league trophy for the 34th time.

Bayern had played a 3-3 draw with RB Leipzig the day before, meaning the pressure was on Leverkusen. They went two goals down but came back to equalise late in the match. However, they could not find a third goal, handing the title back to Bayern.

Kane, who watched the Leverkusen match along with his teammates in Munich, posted a video on social media after the final whistle. He celebrated the win with the caption: “We are the Champions!”

This marks the first major trophy of Kane’s career, after several years of coming close with his former club, Tottenham Hotspur.

Bayern’s new manager, Vincent Kompany, who replaced Thomas Tuchel last May, led the team to success in his first season at the club. Speaking earlier in April, Kompany had said, “As a coach, you feel it’s the players who’ve won the title, so I wouldn’t say it’s my title. It’s about the players. Talent determines a lot. I want them to get the chance to show their best. I hope we can do it.”

Kompany, 39, had faced doubts over his experience after his former team Burnley was relegated from the English Premier League. But he proved his critics wrong by bringing unity and strong performances back to Bayern.

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, a former Bayern player himself, congratulated his old club, saying: “Congratulations to Bayern. It’s a deserved championship. They were the more consistent team over the season and they deserve the shield.”

Bayern have now won 34 league titles, including 12 in the last 13 years. Their dominance is unmatched in Europe’s top football leagues.

Kane was key to Bayern’s success, scoring 24 goals in 32 matches so far. He is on track to be the top scorer for the second season in a row since joining the Bundesliga.

Meanwhile, veteran forward Thomas Muller, who is leaving Bayern at the end of the season, played his 500th Bundesliga match. He became only the fourth player to do so for one club and extended his record for most league titles to 13.
