The Labour Party in Delta State has criticised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and members of the Peoples Democratic Party for what it called a “wasteful defection ceremony” to the All Progressives Congress.

Reacting to the event in Asaba, the LP’s National Vice Chairman for the South-South, Chief Tony Ezeagwu, said on Tuesday that the governor’s move and the ceremony were unnecessary and a misuse of public funds.

“We are now the only opposition party in Delta State,” Ezeagwu said. “We thank God that Oborevwori and the PDP made the mistake of joining the APC. Their defection is an advantage to us in LP.”

He added that the new union within APC would bring confusion, as it includes people who had left the party before because of internal fights.

“Trust Nigerian politicians—they don’t think about the people. It’s all about their personal gain,” Ezeagwu said. “Very soon, you will see them start fighting each other again. In the end, about 80 per cent of them will leave APC. PDP is now finished in Delta.”

Ezeagwu also condemned the money spent on the defection event.

“It is a complete waste of resources for Oborevwori to spend such a huge amount of money to officially defect to APC,” he said.

He added that the move reminds Nigerians of a comment once made by APC chieftain Adams Oshiomhole: *“As soon as you join APC, your sins are forgiven.”*

“Their only reason for joining APC is to protect themselves. It’s not about service. It’s about survival,” Ezeagwu stated.
