The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has launched an investigation into a heated altercation between a lecturer and a student that spiraled into a physical confrontation at the Faculty of Arts on Tuesday.

The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, involved Dr. Chukwudi Okoye of the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies and Goddy Mbakwe Precious, a third-year student of History and International Studies.

Eyewitnesses say the clash began when Dr. Okoye attempted to pass by the student, who was dancing in the corridor while being filmed for a TikTok video.

The lecturer reportedly tapped her on the shoulder, saying, Excuse me, but the student reacted angrily, accusing him of hitting her.

“She was dancing while someone was recording her. The lecturer, trying to pass, touched her shoulder and asked her to excuse him. But she got upset, saying, ‘Can you imagine how he just hit me?’” an eyewitness recounted.

What started as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a scuffle, with reports alleging that the student bit the lecturer on the wrist and arm.

A viral video of the confrontation has fueled widespread debate online, with many questioning appropriate boundaries in academic spaces.

Reacting to the incident, the university management condemned the altercation and assured the public of a thorough and impartial probe.

In a statement signed by the Acting Head of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol, Njelita Louis O., UNIZIK reaffirmed its commitment to discipline and fairness.
