The Plateau State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission on Friday urged travellers to report reckless driving.

FRSC made this known during a campaign series focused on reducing road accidents during the 2024 ember months.

The campaign, titled “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers,” began in Jos on November 6, 2024. Activities included a press briefing, town hall meetings, distribution of informational fliers, and a motorcade aimed at educating the public.

Speaking at the launch, the Plateau State FRSC Sector Commander, Maxwell Plateau, emphasized the importance of safe driving and encouraged passengers to speak up if they notice dangerous driving.

“We must appreciate the transport sector’s role in ensuring people and goods reach their destinations safely,” he said. “However, FRSC will increase its visibility, provide prompt rescue response, and strengthen enforcement of traffic rules. But passengers must also play their part.”

Plateau added that travellers can help create a safer environment by reporting reckless driving. “Safe arrival is everyone’s responsibility,” he reminded.

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, also attended the event as the Special Guest of Honour. Represented by Noel Nkup, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mutfwang praised the FRSC’s dedication to making the roads safer. He noted that he understands the challenges faced by road users due to the state of the roads and assured that improvements are underway.

The state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Yakubu Dalyop, also pledged support for road safety efforts. He shared that the union has implemented new safety measures, such as setting up a task force to inspect vehicles at their parks. “No vehicle will be allowed to carry overload. All passengers must complete the passenger manifest,” he said.

The FRSC hopes that by working together, road accidents can be reduced, ensuring safer travels during the ember months.
