A clash between a police special constabulary and a soldier in Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, led to the deaths of two people on Sunday afternoon.

The incident took place at Agyaragu Market around 12:30 p.m. while police were investigating a reported motorcycle theft.

According to a statement by the Nasarawa Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, a suspect was arrested for motorcycle theft with the help of a police constabulary from Jenkwe Division. As they were taking the suspect to the police station, a soldier, who was home on leave from Borno State, attempted to stop the arrest.

DSP Nansel explained that the soldier pulled out a knife and stabbed the police constabulary. In self-defense, the police constabulary and others overpowered the soldier, using his knife against him. Both the soldier and the constabulary were injured, and the soldier was later confirmed dead.

Following the incident, local youths reportedly gathered and attacked the police station, setting it on fire. Police responded to the attack, and three of the attackers were injured, with one later confirmed dead.

The Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, visited the scene with military support and quickly deployed police units to restore order. The police statement confirmed that normalcy has been restored in the area, and an investigation is underway to find those involved in the attack.
