The Federal Government has introduced advanced surveillance technology to monitor and enhance security on the Third Mainland Bridge and nearby areas.
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, announced the new control room setup in Lagos on Thursday during a site inspection with members of the National Assembly.
Umahi explained that the surveillance room would be staffed by security teams from the Army, Navy, Police, and local forces, and a dedicated boat and vehicles would allow responses to incidents within five minutes. “This control room will greatly improve the safety of road users,” Umahi said.
Additionally, Umahi shared that similar technology would soon be installed on major highways, including the Lagos-Calabar, Sokoto-Badagry, and Abuja-Kano roads. He also mentioned plans for solar lighting on main roads to increase night visibility and boost economic activity.
During the visit, Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Peter Nwebonyi, praised the minister’s efforts, calling the new CCTV system a “significant step in improving the safety of motorists and pedestrians.” He added, “This initiative shows Nigeria’s commitment to progress and development.”
Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, applauded the government’s dedication to both building and safeguarding infrastructure, especially the recent progress on the Lagos-Calabar coastal road.
Ngwu commended Umahi’s dedication and assured the Senate’s continued support, saying, “The Senate stands firmly behind the minister’s initiatives and will provide necessary legislative backing.”
Senator Mpigi Barinada from Rivers South East also emphasized the importance of transparency in infrastructure projects. He expressed support for extending similar surveillance initiatives to the South-East and South-South regions to ensure equal development.
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, Akin Alabi, praised Umahi for tackling infrastructure challenges.
He assured that the committee would maintain oversight to ensure accountability. “The National Assembly will oversee government spending to ensure that all projects meet the highest standards,” Alabi said.
The Ministry of Works recently started construction on the Ondo section of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, marking another step toward improving Nigeria’s infrastructure.
