A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has fixed December 10, 2024, to hear a case filed by Mr. Steven Amos and his wife, Doris.

They are suing the Lagos State Government and other agencies for N1.06 billion after their son, Kingsley Amos, disappeared 14 years ago.

The lawsuit, marked ID/13107MFHR/22, includes the Lagos State Government, the Attorney General, the Ministry of Youths and Social Development, the Commissioner of Police, and the Inspector General of Police as defendants. Kingsley, who was 14 years old when he went missing, was mentally challenged.

Justice L.A.F. Oluyemi set the judgment date because the respondents did not defend themselves in court after being served with the suit. The case focuses on Kingsley’s alleged illegal arrest, detention, and possible death after he was taken by Lagos State agents in 2010.

According to the Amos family’s lawyer, Eze Alala, Kingsley was taken without their knowledge during a raid in the Ojodu area.

He was later found at the Majidun Rehabilitation Centre, but on April 14, 2010, officials told the family that Kingsley had been moved to an undisclosed location. Since then, they have not seen him.

The family claims that despite many inquiries, Lagos State officials have not revealed Kingsley’s whereabouts, causing them great emotional distress.

They are asking the court for Kingsley’s immediate release, whether dead or alive, and N1 billion in compensation for his unlawful arrest, detention, and torture. They also seek N50 million in exemplary damages, a public apology in national newspapers, and an additional N10 million to cover legal costs.

The Amos family has expressed their frustration with the Lagos State Government and police for their lack of transparency and accountability. They stated, “This incident has caused us years of anguish.”
