A group of sports journalists was kidnapped in the Isseke community of Ihiala Local Government Area in Anambra State while traveling to cover the Nigeria vs. Libya African Cup of Nations qualifying match in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the journalists, about 11 in total, were traveling in a bus through Isseke.
According to the PUNCH indicate that they were ambushed and taken by unknown armed men.
A source revealed, nine of the journalists have been rescued, but one of them, identified as Kola, has sadly been reported dead. Four others are still missing and are believed to be in captivity.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the kidnapping on Thursday.
He said, “Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala. Meanwhile, operations are still ongoing for the possible rescue of the seventh crew member. Further developments shall be communicated.”
The police are actively working to locate the remaining journalists and ensure their safe return. The incident has raised concerns about security in the region, especially as it comes amid other violent attacks in Anambra State.
