An unidentified soldier has reportedly stabbed Police Inspector Saka Ganiyu to death in the Ojo area of Lagos State, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at around 6:30 a.m. at the Volks Bus Stop along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
NAN gathered that Inspector Ganiyu, who was attached to the Lagos State Task Force, was performing his lawful duties when a Volkswagen commercial bus driving against traffic was stopped. The driver of the bus, who identified himself as a soldier, engaged in an argument with the police team.
During the altercation, the soldier reportedly called his colleagues from the nearby Ojo Army Barracks. Armed with dangerous weapons, they allegedly attacked the police team. In the chaos, Inspector Ganiyu sustained serious injuries.
The police called for reinforcements, and more officers arrived at the scene to repel the soldiers. Inspector Ganiyu was rushed to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment but unfortunately died while receiving medical care.
The deceased officer’s body has been taken to the mortuary for autopsy, and an investigation has been launched by the police.
The Nigerian Army’s 81 Division confirmed the incident in a statement, expressing deep regret. Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, the division’s Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, said the army had apprehended the soldier suspected of the crime.
Ayeni stated, “The soldier suspected to have committed the offence has been handed over to the military police for investigation and further disciplinary actions.” He added that the Nigerian Army remains committed to its Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement and is determined to maintain a positive relationship with other security agencies.
The Nigerian Army also pledged to continue working closely with other security forces to ensure the safety of lives and property in the country.
