The Lagos State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Jelili Sulaimon, over alleged misconduct.
The suspension, which takes effect immediately, was announced on Monday following a unanimous decision by the lawmakers.
In a statement from spokesperson for the Assembly Speaker, Eromosele Ebhomele, it was confirmed that Sulaimon was suspended due to his defiance and non-compliance with the legislative House. The Assembly also instructed the Vice Chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, to take over the administration of the local government.
“The management of the council, including the manager and treasurer, must recognize the authority of the vice chairman and support him to perform his duties effectively,” Ebhomele added.
The motion for Sulaimon’s suspension was moved by Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs. He recalled that in April 2024, chaos erupted in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Alimosho, resulting in the death of one Michael Ajayi. After investigating the matter, Okanlawon revealed that the incident was linked to the actions of Jelili.
“Despite being invited, Jelili continued to show misconduct towards the committee of the House,” Okanlawon said. He also accused Sulaimon of failing to follow directives and mismanaging public funds, calling for his immediate suspension.
Supporting the motion, Majority Leader Noheem Adams noted, “The Alimosho council chairman does not follow procurement processes or the budget. His misconduct is unacceptable, and this suspension should serve as a warning to other local government chairmen.”
Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, also backed the suspension, citing a report by the State Auditor-General. The report highlighted significant financial irregularities and non-compliance with regulations under Sulaimon’s leadership.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the session, directed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to communicate the Assembly’s decision to all relevant authorities.
With Sulaimon’s suspension, the vice chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, will take over the administration of Alimosho Local Government immediately.
