A fire broke out at the popular Kantin Kwari textile market in Kano, destroying about ten shops and causing the loss of goods worth millions of naira.

The fire started late at night on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at a building on Gidan Inuwa Mai Bayajidda Street, which houses over 100 shops.

Witnesses said they tried their best to stop the fire and save some items before the arrival of the fire service. One shop owner, Musa Abba, shared what happened:

“The fire started around 10 p.m. while we were patrolling the market for security. When we saw the fire, we quickly alerted others and started to remove the goods we could to reduce the level of destruction.”

Another shop owner, who lost everything in the fire, was very distressed and said, “God is the one who allows everything that happens to us. See all my goods, now turned to rubble. We hope the government will support us to recover.”

The Kano State Fire Service Command reported that the fire was caused by a solar electricity fault.

In response, the management of the Kantin Kwari textile market is urging for improved fire safety measures to prevent future incidents.
