Former senator Dino Melaye has been cleared of charges brought against him by the Federal Government after a six-year legal fight.
The High Court in Abuja, led by Justice Sylvanus Oriji, discharged and acquitted Melaye on Monday, October 7, 2024.
The case, which started in 2018, accused Melaye of giving false information about an assassination attempt on his life in 2017.
Melaye had claimed that people tried to kill him in his hometown of Ayetoro-Gbede, Kogi State. However, the government said his claims were not true and charged him in court.
Melaye pleaded not guilty in March 2018 and faced a long legal process that included delays. One significant delay occurred when Justice Aromeh Akogu, who was originally handling the case, passed away suddenly in December 2017. Despite the delays, Melaye continued to maintain his innocence.
On Monday, Melaye took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to celebrate his victory. He expressed his gratitude to his legal team and faith in God.
“Justice served after six years. Justice delayed is never justice denied. God alone be praised. SEN. DINO MELAYE 12 – FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND IGP 0. 12 CASES ALL WON BY GOD,” Melaye posted.
He also said, “I take life as it comes, but in all the challenges of life, I trust in God only. He is always with the just.”
Melaye had faced several legal battles over the years, including allegations that he was involved in violent incidents with the police in Kogi State. However, he has now been cleared of these accusations as well.
