Spotify celebrates 10th anniversary of Wizkid’s ‘Ojuelegba’

Popular streaming platform, Spotify has marked the 10th anniversary of Wizkid’s hit song, ‘Ojuelegba’, celebrating the track as a key contributor to the global rise of Afrobeats.

The song, released in 2014 as part of Wizkid’s second studio album ‘Ayo’, has been a fan favorite for a decade, continuing to resonate with millions of listeners worldwide.

In a statement on Tuesday, Spotify highlighted the cultural significance of Ojuelegba, describing it as “a gateway for many international listeners into Nigerian music.”

The track, written by Wizkid and produced by Legendury Beatz, was instrumental in showcasing Nigerian talent on the global stage, according to the streaming platform.

“Ojuelegba is popular amongst audiences of all ages, with its largest demographic in the past year being listeners aged 18-24,” Spotify noted. “The song has also drawn significant interest from older listeners, with 23% of plays coming from the 25-29 age group, and 13% from those aged 30-34.”

As of April 2024, *Ojuelegba* had achieved over 55 million streams on Spotify. The platform revealed that the United States, United Kingdom, France, Nigeria, and the Netherlands are the top five countries streaming the song, while Lagos, London, Port Harcourt, Abuja, and Nairobi lead in city streams.

Spotify also released a one-minute video celebrating the song’s acceptance and its impact on the residents of Ojuelegba, the Lagos neighbourhood that inspired the track.

The lyrics of Ojuelegba, which capture Wizkid’s journey and the vibrant culture of Lagos, continue to inspire listeners, reflecting themes of resilience and hope.

Wizkid, gained international recognition with his debut album Superstar in 2011 and has since released four additional albums.

The Nigerian music star has also hinted about releasing his sixth album, ‘Morayo’, in October as a tribute to his late mother.

Ojuelegba remains one of Wizkid’s most celebrated songs, solidifying his legacy as one of Africa’s most influential artists and marking a major milestone in the growth of Afrobeats globally.
