Officials of the National Agency for Drugs Administration and Control have seized three petrol tankers transporting edible crude soy oil in the Apapa area of Lagos.

The agency revealed this in a statement posted on its official X handle (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

According to NAFDAC, the edible oil was reportedly loaded into the tankers from an oil depot. The agency expressed concerns about the potential health risks posed by the oil being transported in tankers previously used for petrol, which could lead to chemical contamination.

“NAFDAC officials have seized three petrol tanker trucks in Apapa for allegedly transporting crude edible vegetable oil. The oil had reportedly been trans-loaded into the tankers from an edible oil depot,” the statement read.

To prevent any risk to public health, NAFDAC officials escorted the tankers to a processing facility in Sango-Ota, where the oil was transferred to the Southwest Zonal Office of NAFDAC for further regulatory action.

“Concerned about the potential health risks due to chemical contamination from the tankers’ previous use for transporting petrol, NAFDAC officials escorted the tankers to a processing facility in Sango-Ota,” the agency added.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to strict enforcement and continuous surveillance to protect public health. The agency also urged the public to report any suspicious or unwholesome practices related to food and regulated products.
