The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a 27-year-old man, Damilola Orelaja, for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl in the Omu Ijebu area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on July 22, 2024, has once again brought attention to the disturbing trend of sexual violence against minors in Nigeria.
Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest to our correspondent via WhatsApp on Thursday. According to Odutola, “The suspect allegedly lured the survivor into his apartment on Araromi Street, Ọmu-Ijebu, at around 8:00 pm on July 22, 2024, while the survivor was returning from errands.”
The matter came to light when the survivor’s father, identified only as Wasiu, reported the incident to the Omu division of the police. “The suspect was immediately arrested when the matter was brought to our attention on July 23. He will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution,” Odutola stated.
This case follows a recent allegation of a police officer raping a 17-year-old girl inside a Lagos police station, highlighting the pervasive nature of sexual violence across different sectors of society.
In response to the rising incidence of gender-related crimes, civil society organizations have been calling for swift justice for survivors and greater community involvement in addressing the issue.
Dr. Uwemedimo Esiet, co-founder and director of Action Health Incorporated, emphasized the need for increased public awareness in a recent interview. He stated, “An increase in public education and enlightenment is needed to ensure that the communities become custodians of the children and young people’s rights to life, association, education, and to just enjoy their fundamental human rights.”
As the case against Orelaja proceeds, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenge of protecting minors from sexual predators and the crucial role of both law enforcement and community vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable members of society.
The Ogun State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to thoroughly investigate the case and bring the perpetrator to justice, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
