In the past three months, at least 11 university students have been killed and 22 others kidnapped in various violent incidents across Nigerian universities according to the PUNCH investigation.
According to the investigation, the affected students were victims of different violent incidents, including robbery attacks.
On May 22, 2024, Favour Ugwuka, a final-year student at Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, committed suicide in her hostel at the Ishieke Campus.
Also in May, a 200-level engineering student at Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State, Alex Timileyi, was beaten to death by a fellow student over a claim that he stole a mobile phone.
In the same month, two female students of Joseph Sarwuan University of Agriculture in Makurdi, Benue State, were kidnapped by gunmen.
Two students from Confluence State University of Science and Technology in Lokoja, Kogi State, were kidnapped on May 9 and killed on May 25, 2024.
On June 13, Adekolore Glory, a female student at the University of Benin, was raped and murdered at the Iyowa Community in Benin City.
In June, Ifunanya Miracle, a fresh graduate of Quantity Surveying from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, died while trying to escape a robbery by an unknown prankster on the school’s premises. Her friend, Peace, was injured and taken to the hospital.
In July 2024, Favour Okenyi, a 100-level student of Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, went missing after a chemistry practical. Her body was later found near the Eni Njoku male hostel.
That same month, Modupe Ayandare, a student at Adekunle Ajasin University, was found dead outside the campus.
Also in July, Hammed Fabiyi, a final-year student at Tai Solarin University of Education, was killed by suspected cultists. He was reportedly dragged out of an exam hall while writing his final papers.
Francis Palowei, a final-year student at Niger Delta University, was stabbed to death at Sand Dump, a popular student spot, by local youths when he refused to give them N150.
Two days ago, a fatal auto crash involving some students and a shuttle driver at the University of Ilorin’s main gate resulted in the death of a student.
