An explosion has struck the multimillion Naira Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam in Niger state.

The dam, which has not yet been officially commissioned by the Federal Government, is the fourth such facility in the state, following Jebba, Kainji, and Shiroro.

According to Vanguard, the explosion occurred early on Monday morning. The exact cause of the explosion is still unknown.

A reliable source from the area confirmed the incident, saying that several workers on duty sustained various degrees of injuries.

These injured workers are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, while those more seriously affected have been rushed to Minna, the state capital, for further medical attention.

“We saw a foreigner, a Chinese worker, who had severe injuries being ferried to Minna for further medical attention, but we cannot say the exact number of staff injured. They are many,” the source added.

Besides the human injuries, the explosion has reportedly damaged some installations at the dam. The impact of this explosion on the overall power supply across the country is not yet known.

More details will follow as the situation develops.
