EFCC withdraws appeal against order blocking Yahaya Bello’s arrest
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has taken steps to withdraw an appeal against a Kogi High Court order that prevented it from arresting former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello.
In a notice filed on April 22, the EFCC stated that it decided to withdraw the appeal because circumstances have changed, rendering the appeal unnecessary.
“The commission also acknowledges that the appeal was filed after the time limit allowed by law,” the notice stated.
“The appellant intends to withdraw the appeal against the respondent in the above-mentioned case,” the notice continued.
The notice explained that events that unfolded on April 17, 2024, made the EFCC’s appeal irrelevant. Additionally, it noted that the appeal was filed beyond the allowable time frame.
“The orders issued by Jamil on February 9, 2024, were intended to remain in effect until the hearing and determination of the originating motion on notice, which Jamil finalized on April 17, 2024,” the notice clarified.
“Furthermore, the notice of appeal was filed late, and therefore, we request that the appeal be dismissed for being filed beyond the time limit and being incompetent.”
