The Federal Government has struck an agreement with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company to enhance power supply to 10 states and the Federal Capital Territory under their coverage.
Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, summoned the utilities and Transmission Company of Nigeria over worsening power supply in their operational areas.
During the meeting in Abuja, Chief Adelabu stressed the importance of cooperation between the government and the DisCos to achieve significant progress in improving electricity supply.
“We work through the operators. Our job as a Ministry is to expedite national development through appropriate policies, systems, and structures that guarantee reliable electricity supply,” Chief Adelabu remarked, emphasizing the need for commitment beyond profit-making.
Ag. Managing Director of AEDC, Mr. Victor Ojelabi, and IBEDC’s Managing Director, Kingsley Achife, highlighted challenges like poor load allocation and vandalism.
Achife expressed gratitude for the candid discussion facilitated by the Minister, acknowledging the need for collaboration with TCN to address power supply challenges.
“We’ve given ourselves a timeline of about a quarter, three to six months,” Mr. Achife added, outlining plans for improvement.
Ojelabi attributed the company’s challenges to low supply from the grid, stating, “There’s generally low generation, which necessitated low allocation to both of us, AEDC and IBEDC.”
He provided statistics, indicating a significant deficit in power allocation compared to the company’s needs, underscoring the impact on customer expectations.
With these deliberations, stakeholders aim to mitigate the challenges hindering power distribution, ultimately striving to enhance service delivery to consumers.
