Olympics: Super Falcoons beat Cameroon to enter final qualifying round
Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured their spot in the final qualifying round of the 2024 Olympic Games after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Monday.
Randy Waldrum’s team emerged victorious in the two-legged tie with a 1-0 aggregate score. The Super Falcons launched into the game aggressively and broke the deadlock in the 14th minute courtesy of Esther Okoronkwo.
Okoronkwo, preferred over Asisat Oshoala in the starting lineup, found the net amidst a goalmouth scramble, giving Nigeria the crucial lead.
The hosts continued to apply pressure on the Indomitable Lionesses, creating several scoring opportunities. Juventus midfielder Jennifer Echegini came close to doubling Nigeria’s advantage just after the hour mark but was thwarted by the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
Okoronkwo squandered a golden opportunity to extend the Super Falcons’ lead six minutes before halftime, failing to convert a well-executed long ball from Ashleigh Plumptre.
Nigeria made a substitution just before halftime, with Halimat Ayinde replacing Oluwatosin Demehin. The second half remained goalless.
Cameroonian star Enganemben Annie was shown a red card for unsporting conduct in stoppage time.
The Super Falcons now await the winner between African champions South Africa and Tanzania in the final round. South Africa currently holds a commanding 3-0 advantage from the first leg of their encounter.
