The National Association of Nigerian Students has voiced disagreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities regarding the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.

ASUU recently expressed concerns that the initiative would lead beneficiaries into perpetual indebtedness and hamper universities’ financial stability.

In response, NANS asserted that the student loan scheme offers hope to many students, especially those facing financial difficulties. They urged ASUU not to obstruct the implementation of a program aimed at increasing access to higher education.

Akinteye Babatunde, the President of NANS Senate, emphasized the importance of addressing any genuine concerns ASUU may have openly and transparently.

“It is time for ASUU to prioritise the interests of students and support initiatives that will benefit the entire student community,” he said

Babatunde expressed disappointment in ASUU’s opposition to a program intended to provide much-needed relief to numerous students.

ASUU, in its NEC meeting, cited skepticism about the loan scheme’s success, drawing parallels with failed initiatives in better-managed economies.

They questioned the viability of the scheme in a climate marred by corruption and nepotism, referencing the demise of the Education Bank project after over five years of existence.
