Insurgency: Zulum seeks NEDC intervention to prevent child soldiers recruitment
The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed concern over the renewed threat of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in Nigeria.
Speaking when the new Governing Board and Management of the North-East Development Commission paid him a courtesy visit in Maiduguri on Monday, the governor said it was important to emplace measures to prevent the recruitment of young children into these terrorist groups.
Zulum stressed that maintaining security in the country, especially in the North-East, is crucial. He warned that if children continue to be recruited into Boko Haram and ISWAP, the future of Nigeria could be at risk.
He also highlighted the need to address the plight of over a million Borno residents who have been displaced by Boko Haram and have not yet been resettled.
“Maintaining security in the country entails maintaining security in the North-East. We have to stop children from being recruited into ISWAP and Boko Haram, otherwise, in the next few years Nigeria will be wiped out,” Zulum said.
Furthermore, Zulum called on the NEDC to collaborate with his administration’s Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement program, which aims to facilitate the reintegration of internally displaced persons and the eventual closure of IDP camps.
“We want the NEDC to help us ensure the closure of all camps for the IDPs to go and earn their livelihoods themselves so that they don’t join ISWAP Boko Haram,” Zulum added.
