Corps members lament poor allowance, demand palliative
Members of the National Youth Service Corps have expressed their displeasure over the meager allowance they receive from the Federal Government.
They said the amount was insufficient to cover their basic needs in the current economic situation.
According to The PUNCH, one of them, Saka, who is serving in Delta State, said that he could not save any money from his monthly allowance despite working hard.
“The monthly allowance sustains nothing for me as a corper serving in a distant location. The expenses we face every day are higher than our monthly allowance, which doesn’t meet our daily needs, unless you have other alternatives. However, corps members cannot live basically on the monthly Income.
“One of the biggest financial challenges I face here is the inability to get the needed foodstuff from the market because of the prices of goods, and also being unable to save from the monthly allowance.
“I appeal to the Federal Government to include corpers in the ongoing subsidy removal palliative,” he said
Another corps member, who is serving in Kwara State and wished to remain anonymous, complained that traders and motorcycle riders were exploiting corpers whenever they wore their uniform.
She said, “The main challenge is the inflated price of purchasing foodstuffs, and even transportation, as vendors and bike riders take advantage of us when they see us wearing the Corper’s uniform to double the price for us. Corps members should be among the first set to qualify for the palliative,”
