Benue pastor killed as church building collapses
A church building belonging to Dunamis Church, located at Mission Ward North Bank, collapsed in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, resulting in the death of one person, identified as the church pastor, and four others injured.
According to an eyewitness, the collapse occurred while the pastor and four others were in the church praying.
He described the harrowing experience, saying, “As soon as we heard the collapse of the building, we rushed to the place in an attempt to rescue them. It took some minutes before we could rescue the victims. Meanwhile, four people were injured, and one person we later understand to be the pastor was found dead.”
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Bartholomew Onyeka, provided additional details.
He stated, “Something like that happened, just one person died in the process. You know when debris falls on people like that, the immediate reaction is what happens to the victims.”
“So, people who rushed there were able to rescue four people; unfortunately, one person died. The injured persons are responding to treatment in a hospital where they were taken to.”
Witnesses revealed that the church had held a service on Monday night, and the pastor remained behind with a few others for prayers.
Due to heavy rainfall, they could not leave for their homes, so they continued their prayers.
Tragically, the church building collapsed at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, leading to the pastor’s untimely demise.
The deceased pastor was identified as hailing from the eastern part of Kogi state and married a woman from Akwa Ibom.
