Plateau assembly speaker sacked by election petition tribunal
The election petition tribunal in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, has made a significant decision by removing the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Moses Sule.
According to Daily Trust, the tribunal removed the speaker and Danjuma Azi, a Jos North West constituency representative in the assembly, from their positions.
In this development, the tribunal declared Hon. Naanlong Daniel and Hon. Mark Na’ah, both members of the All Progressive Congress and former majority leaders of the house, as the winners of the March 18 election.
The basis for the petitioner’s challenge was the sponsorship of Sule and Azi by the Peoples Democratic Party.
The petitioner argued that the PDP was not eligible to participate in the election due to a lack of party structure.
In delivering the judgment, the tribunal, led by Muhammad Tukur, ruled that the PDP was not qualified to sponsor the respondents for the election.
Justice Tukur emphasized that since the party lacked a structure, “nothing can stand on nothing.”
Furthermore, the tribunal noted that the PDP had disobeyed an order from Justice S P Gang of the Plateau State High Court issued on November 26, 2020. This order instructed the party to conduct ward congresses.
Justice Tukur pointed out that the Independent National Electoral Commission failed to present any credible documentation proving that the party had conducted repeated congresses in 2021, as claimed by the respondents.
This recent decision follows another by the same tribunal on Thursday when it removed two PDP lawmakers, Maren Ishaku and Timothy Datong, who represented Bokkos and Riyom constituencies in the Plateau State House of Assembly.
